Gongyo means to recite the Sutra and chanting Daimoku in front of the Gohonzon.
In Nichiren Shoshu, we recite the Hoben chapter and Juryo chapter of the Lotus Sutra and chant Daimoku of Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo to the Gohonzon. We offer five prayers in the morning and three prayers in the evening.
Chanting Daimoku is a fundamental practice and is the source of benefits. Therefore it is called ‘Shogyo’ or main practice. To recite the Hoben and the Juryo chapter is to explain and uphold the significance and benefits of Daimoku. Therefore it is called ‘Jogyo’ or supportive practice.
